The event is part of Routes to Roots, a social drop-in for LGBTQ Newcomers and Refugees, held monthly, and providing a safe space for LGBTQ refugees to hang out, do some social activities together, and feel the sense of community we're building together. Thursday, July 7 | 7pm / LIVE MUSIC: Tanya Gallagher and the Southern Soul & Kristina Lao Tanya Gallagher's band The Southern Soul is making the journey from the southeastern US to Vancouver. They are banding together with the talented Kristina Lao (performing with Meg Engel) and have a special night of music planned for you. Tuesday, July 12 | 6pm / BOOK LAUNCH: Indian Summer Festival Presents When Morning Comes: Youth of the Soweto Uprising Tradewind Books launches 'When Morning Comes', a novel by Arushi Raina - a powerful emerging literary talent. Told fromt he perspective of four diverse youth during the Soweto uprising in Apartheid South Africa, the book explores the roots of the uprising and the edifice of Apartheid about to explore. The evening includes a presentation by South African journalist and photographer Laurence Boxall and a reading by the author herself, Arushi Raina. Wednesday, July 13 | 7pm / Tune Night: A Monthly Blue Grass Open Jam at Heartwood Join Trent Freeman of the Pine Siskins at our new monthly blue grass jam night every second Wednesday of the month! The night begins with local performers showcasing original and traditional compositions and is then followed by open jamming. Thursday, July 14 | 6pm / Queer ASL Social at Heartwood Hey queer fam! Are you looking for a place to meet other queer and trans ASL speakers? Want to practice conversation? This is the perfect space for you! Join the Queer ASL social, a place for all levels, including beginners! Friday, July 15 | 6:30pm / Summer Acoustics: A Fundraiser Concert for Kababayan Academic Mentorship Program The Kababayan Academic Mentorship Program (KAMP) invites you and your families to get cozy, and join us at for SUMMER ACOUSTICS: A Fundraising Concert! Through song, poetry, Hip Hop, and storytelling SUMMER ACOUSTICS will help raise funds for KAMP’s first ever summer programming initiative: Summer KAMP! From August 8th to the 11th we will be sending a number of Filipino-identified high school students, along with Filipino camp counsellors, to Loon Lake Lodge and Retreat (Maple Ridge BC, unceded Katzie Territory). Friday, July 22 | 7pm / Trivia Night! Test your quizzical talents at Trivia Night! Hosts, Jess and Silas, will take you on a whirlwind of mind facts you never even knew you wanted to know! Sunday, July 24 | 1pm / Soul Full Brunch with Trinity United Soul-Full brunch looks at the burning issues of our time from a spiritual perspective (usually Christian but not exclusively so). Share ideas, opinions and insights with others who like great local food, fair trade coffee and conversation! Tuesday, July 26 | 6pm / Open Table with Trinity United Wanting to explore spirituality in community? This dinner uses the Christian spiritual year and its ancient concepts to help you deepen your own spirituality, learn new spiritual practices, and share insights. You don't need to know anything about the Christian spiritual framework beforehand nor do you need to be anything other than curious about working with a spiritual tradition to gain your own insights and knowledge. There will be elements of interfaith pieces and connections throughout the year. Wednesday, July 27 | 6pm / The Beehive Design Collective & Test Their Logic Presents: Art of Resistance Tour V. 2 The Beehive Design Collective and Test Their Logik will again hit the road for a cross-Canada tour entitled "Art of Resistance, vol. 2" this summer. We'll be combining storytelling and presentations of our newest masterpiece MesoAmérica Resiste! with hip-hop performances and shows, offering a wide range of workshops, and connecting with environmental and social justice movements across these lands. We'll be travelling with giant art murals, a distro of activist art and literature, and stories, songs, and experiences to share. Thursday, July 28 | 7pm / Killjoy Karaoke! Join Killjoy, an organization working to create spaces of resistance and celebration for queer and trans Indigenous, people of colour, and mixed race folks. Come out for their karaoke night fundraiser, with all funds going to support Killjoy Fest in August! All ages, all genders, and allies welcome! |
