Ch-ch-changes at Heartwood! It's high time for some changes at Heartwood! If you've visited the cafe lately, you will have noticed a new lay to the land - we've changed our seating. Along with physical space, we have also virtuallyupdated our website with our snazzy new logo. Come by for a visit soon and check it out atheartwoodcc.ca!

Needless to say, our vision for social justice and community continues to be the heart to these shifts and our broader communities (that's you) are riding shotgun with us in this journey! Last week we sent out a survey asking our patrons what would make Heartwood a more fun, accessible, and inclusive space. We've enjoyed reading about your ideas and stories. Please keep them coming! Your words will guide Heartwood's next steps in how we grow our mission and goals.

You can fill out the survey through the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/QXJRMKR

Community Events

The Feast Worldwide is a day of global dinner parties in 40+ cities across 6 continents. The goal? To spark collaboration that drives local entrepreneurs and social initiatives forward. The idea is simple. Participants host a dinner with those they admire - but instead of talking about problems, they talk about one person’s solution and how they can move it forward. As a social space centred on community collabortation and creation, Heartwood is happy to see events encouraging people to connect and create!

Interested? Make sure to RSVP to the event through this link: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/the-feast-worldwide-vancouver-tickets-12947497313

WHAT WE'RE UP TO IN AUGUST!

Last month, we had a full calendar of too much goodness! During Ramadan, there was a beautiful night of Radical Muslim performers sharing their talents at an events called “Breaking the Fast.” The night ended beautifully with prayer. As a space that encourages interfaith, it was beautiful to see communities come together for prayer, especially one led by young women. Azaadi BC also brought in full house of young poets for their event, Sounds of Revolution. We’re consistently amazed with how much talent is in the city! FIRST brought in a community discussion led by sex workers called Beyond Bedford, speaking to the current and relevant issues of sex worker rights. Hollaback Vancouver, an organization combatting street harassment, launched at Heartwood! Finally, we had a beautifully angst-y night of Women of the 90's Queeraoke, which Shout Back Fest held as a fundraiser for their upcoming festival! We weren’t lying when we said goodness.

In the past month, we’ve also introduced two events that will be become regulars to our calendars: Trivia Night with Woody and Latty! and All-Ages Acoustic Pop Punk Nights presented by Van City Royalty! We’re excited for these partnerships! Watch out for their events alternating each month!

Bert Monterona Auction! If you’ve visited Heartwood this past month, you’ve likely have seen the inescapably beautiful artwork of Bert Monterona. His exhibit will be exhibiting at Heartwood until the end of September. Bert will be auctioning his pieces at Heartwood throughout the remainder of his exhibit. For more information and to make a bid, please visit the cafe!

Are you looking for a space for your organization, group, collective, friends can meet? Come over to Heartwood!

Reserving Tables
For people interested in bringing your friends or group to Heartwood during an evening, we encourage you to make a table reservation . Making a reservation lets us know what to expect and helps us run a much smoother night! Please note that we have full venue events on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays - make sure to check out events calendar!

For any bookings and table reservations, please contact us by email at [email protected] or by phone at (604) 872-3166.

Booking Our Front Room
Our front room seats 20 people comfortably and can be closed off from the rest of the cafe crowd with sliding doors. We encourage everyone booking the Front Room to give a small venue contribution (suggested $20/hr, though pay what you’re able) back to the cafe. It’s these contributions that support Heartwood in continuing to be a community space where folks can connect, create, and collaborate!

Changes in the Cafe
In the past, we know that groups were interested in booking the back booth for meeting space. If you’ve been to the cafe lately, you have probably noticed that our booth is no longer there. Over the past couple months we have been putting in new furniture and moving around the layout of the cafe. Sorry for any inconveniences in interior renovations! We are continuously figuring out ways to make our space more accessible and welcoming for folks. If you have any feedback for us, please send it over to [email protected].
